The minimally invasive surgery or also called minimum access surgery is turning out to be one of the requisite methods in the current vogue of hospital surgeries. Laparoscopic surgery, which comes under this category helps society by offering advantages like reducing post-surgery trauma, minimizing the use of anaesthesia chemicals, reducing the blood loss and period of hospitalization. The laparoscopic tool, used for the surgery is designed with finite Degrees of Freedom (DOF) to perform surgical operations with minimal incisions. It is inserted into the body through guides called trocars. The conventional laparoscopic tools are constructed with rigid structures, having jaws at the tip, which will open and close according to the movement given about the fulcrum point. The manual method of operating the laparoscopic tool is a tiring process for the surgeons, causing fatigue during the operation. Hence, to make this process easy, robotic systems were developed for laparoscopic surgery, like, da Vinci Surgical System by Intuitive Surgical, Inc. The robotic laparoscopic system has the capability to produce highly dexterous motions with less effort from the surgeons. Though there are significant advantages of the robotic laparoscopy systems, it adds substantial financial cost to the hospitals and the patients for performing the simple surgery. For example, the third generation and fourth generation “da Vinci” systems, which is prevailingly used for surgeries in India, costs around $1million to $2million, respectively. These robotic systems need training before use and hence the country has limited training institutes where the surgeons can practice the usage of robots. In this proposal, we have developed a design of ergonomic articulating laparoscopic tools, which can overcome the disadvantages of manual and robotic laparoscope systems. This design aims to bring agility in movements and reduce the size of the system by incorporating a simple Cable-Driven Mechanism (CDM) to bring different Range of Motions (ROM) at the end effectors of the laparoscopic tool. The pure mechanical design of the instrument helps in providing effective tactile feedback, minimizing the power consumption during operation and making it cost-effective for usage.
