We are excited to share our idea of innovative world of packaging that has a lasting impact on our planet Earth as we shift to a greener more responsible future business practice. Styrofoam is a petroleum based non-biodegradable product. The Styrofoam gets decomposed in around 500 years. This leads to serious environmental pollution. However, thermocol or styrofoams have become an indispensable part of life. Added to it is the fact that it is light and can be windblown to many places. The resulting monomers of styrene when ingested by marine life are toxic and it can also move through the food chain. Also, The Ministry for Environment, Forest and Climate Change had issued a gazette notification last year announcing the ban on “The manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of following single-use plastic, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene (Thermocol), commodities with effect from the 1st July, 2022.” This has turned us to biodegradable alternative for packaging purposes.Mycelial packaging is an alternative to styrofoam packaging. The mushroom would be grown on waste materials from the agricultural lands such as straw and wood chips. In India we have not come across any patents for indigenous mushrooms used as potential alternative to develop biodegradable Styrofoam like material. We are interested in identifying indigenous mushroom mycelia that can be used as gluing material for substrates obtained from the agricultural residues to design cheap and biodegradable alternative to non-biodegradable Styrofoam. The other benefits of this biodegradable packaging material is: 1. To reduce the carbon footprint caused by styrofoam and plastic packaging materials.2. Efficient utilisation of agricultural residues and reuse as substrate for fungal mycelium 3. It is a cheap and sustainable solution.
