In their own words
Development of organic dye and tattoo ink from marine sources Dyes and Colorants from natural sources are gaining importance mainly due to their health and environmental issues. The present proposal also relates to an organic pigment or dye obtained from a marine-derived source. Many people use their bodies as an artistic canvas for permanently inked drawings. But the coloured pigments in them were not developed for use in tattoos and may cause harmful reactions in some people. Still, research now indicates tattoos are not bad for everyone. In people who heal well, they are getting a tattoo may prime their germ-fighting immune systems for action and in a good way. After all, getting a tattoo means putting foreign particles in the body. The immune system should respond by removing them - or at least trying to. But the molecules of tattoo ink are too big for those cells to deal with. That is what makes a tattoo a permanent piece of body art. The inks used for tattoos can be either inorganic or organic. The ones used in tattoo ink are synthetic, meaning manufactured. Organic inks come in a much more comprehensive array of colours than do inorganic ones. The Food and Drug Administration, makes rules about what kinds of colours can be added to cosmetics. Although FDA could regulate tattoo inks, it has not done so yet. So no ink is currently approved for use in human skin. More and more people have been reporting harmful reactions to them. Some tattoos make a person’s skin tender and itchy or bumpy or scaly. This usually is due to some ingredient in coloured inks, such as chromium or cobalt. Those created with metal inks can interfere with an MRI scan also. The strong magnet in the MRI machine can heat the metal in the tattoo ink. This leads us to derive marine-derived cosmetic tattoo ink that has beneficial effects on human skin health care. It was also detected that bioactive substances derived from marine resources have diverse functional roles as natural skincare agents. These properties can be applied to the development of novel cosmetics and nutricosmetics. One of the present investigation objects is to use a squid ink sac or other marine sources to extract organic particles or dyes containing black or black-brown melanin pigments. There is a widening scope for industries to exploit the availability of aquatic products, mainly hair dyes also. Despite numerous promising candidates of bioactive and beneficial compounds investigated in marine organisms and their symbiotic bacteria, only a few examples of commercial products were found, as in the case of Circumdatins. Incredibly long steps of exploration still lack validation and standardizationHence the primary objectives of our research proposal include: • The development of nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals improves and nourishes the skin and hair. • Development of organic dye and tattoo ink from marine-derived active ingredients. Therefore, the oceans still have enormous potential for discovering and developing new compounds and bioactive molecules of microbial origin for technical and cosmetic purposes. We hope to isolate unique marine skin and hair care products for human well-being for a sustainable and eco-friendly society through this proposal.
