Niruthi’s foray into the Indian Agriculture Insurance Service market started in 2011 and it consciously worked on developing products and services integrating the best of technologies, from satellite remote sensing, crop-weather simulation modeling to mobile technologies, and Artificial Intelligence blending complex algorithms such as Deep Learning (e.g., Convolutitional Neural Networks) for weather-based analytics and image interpretation and data assimilation. Working in collaboration with the world’s largest Re-insurance Company, Swiss Re, along with India’s largest Crop Insurance Company, Agriculture Insurance Company of India, with active participation by Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA), a National Research Institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Niruthi developed: I) Historical weather and crop yield data at village-level for assessing basis risk by blending ground-based weather observations with satellite data and by calibrating crop-weather simulation models with high-resolution satellite data and historical crop yields from crop cutting experiments. II) Smart Sampling technique: To reduce the burden of conducting thousands of crop cutting experiments under PMFBY, Niruthi developed technologies to intelligently sample the insurance units. The technology was tested for three years by carrying out 13000 Crop Cutting experiments in 15 districts in Maharashtra (under Public Private Partnership model) along with other products catering to the Weather-based and Yield-based crop insurance. In the process we built the necessary algorithms for arriving at a scientific smart sampling mechanism which has become the need of the hour to meet the challenges for the insurance companies operating in India with the deployment of PMFBY. Niruthi is proud to put on record that during these challenging years it never ventured into commercialisation of its products and services until a very stable and rugged model to service its customers in the best possible manner was in place. III) Niruthi also developed mobile technologies that use AI techniques for converting crop images at the time of harvest to yield. The technology can be deployed for augmenting the CCEs, providing rapid assessments of crop yields, crop losses over large areas. Our goal is to increase crop productivity through monitoring and managing risk at the farm level using an array of tools and technologies for integrating data from satellites, mobile phones, drones, Automated Weather Stations (AWS), collaborative computing platform and more importantly interacting with thousands of field coordinators and progressive farmers through our CropSnap mobile tool which communicates directly with the farmers and local markets. Our analytics platform guides data collection and integration to provide location-specific near real-time assessments of crop booking and crop health and yield forecasts and estimates.
