We are working on transforming a badly molested acre of land that had been ravaged by dumping of waste since the last 25 years. To achieve the goal of creating this food forest we are applying the regenerative principles of Permaculture. We practice no-till natural farming techniques and apply no chemicals and fertilisers in our land. We have come up with our own five step composting process by where-in the entire village's organic waste is collected every morning by us as that so called waste forms the core ingredient of our compost. The compost is medicinal as we apply locally grown potent medicinal plants in one stage. Also, at the final stage we use red wiggler worms to further enrich the quality of the compost. We have also started working with the local bamboo weavers to revive the dying art of weaving and constructing with bamboo. We have come up with bamboo flower pots that are much more healthier for the plants than plastic ones and also much more resilient than clay pots. We have also linked our project to save a dying river in Darjeeling. We have organised massive river clean-ups but the campaign is much more than just clean-ups. Our compost making process has managed to reduce the waste going into the river by 67% as we collect every bit of organic waste that used to earlier get dumped into the river. We are working with other government agencies and NGOs to find a sustainable solution for managing plastic waste too.
