E[co]work is a co-working concept adapted to the waste sector that brings the benefits of shared infrastructure to e-waste microentrepreneurs. By providing a physical working place that is safe and in line with the legal requirements, we will support microentrepreneurs transition from their current unlicenced inner city workshops through affordable ‘pay-per-use’ options for storage and dismantling workspaces. Central to the idea of E[co]work is to enable the micro-entrepreneurs in their own business development, while at the same time steering material flows towards formal and safe downstream options. E[co]work also has a strong focus on digitalization of e-waste management through a digital platform based on blockchain for inventory and operation management that provides traceability as well as links into a digital marketplace. Through E[co]work, dismantlers will benefit by gaining access to a wider market through their formalized status, improve on their work efficiency and receive additional services such as training, healthcare, insurance, banking services and more. We want our first pilot space to be implemented and showcased in the NCR, that is currently the informal e-waste recycling hub of India. It will be a first-of-its-kind anywhere in the world, and we are very motivated to make it a successful model for replication and scaling across the country as well around the world. The concept of co-working spaces has remained limited to white-collar jobs. We believe an innovative approach to shared workspaces for the recycling sector has a high potential for impact on social, environmental, and economic fronts.
