India comprises a significant size maritime sector with 12 Major and 200+ Non-Major Ports situated along its 7500 km long coastline and a vast network of navigable waterways. The total cargo handling capacity of Indian ports is about 2400 mln tonnes per annum (MTPA). India is strategically located on the world's shipping routes with a coastline due to this domestic maritime transportation has been given boost by Government of India vide their various promotional scheme like Sagar Mala, and River connectivity. Sea is the cheapest source of transportation in Industry right now and will become more viable and cheaper in future. Most trade is now through coastal transportation of material, which in turn make the commodities, production viable and cheaper for end users. Now major commodities like Cement, Clinkers, Steel, Coils, Coal/Coke, Salt, Line Stone, Iron Ore, Mineral are majorly transported thru sea route within India. This domestic sea transportation has given ample opportunities to companies who owns MBC’s, Barges, Cranes etc. The small vessels are economical, fuel efficient for coastal domestic movement which in turn also control green-house gases emission. MBC has greater demand over SOC Barge as they can ply in all weather conditions, have weatherproof hatch, ply to all port of India and runs with HFO and not on HSD which is cheaper than HSD. These are unique in terms of capacity of 6800 Mts and much preferred for coastal movement within India. In India, 6800 MT MBCs are mostly not available and only Barges with RSV-IV class for 2500 to 3000 DWT are available. So, these MBC have advantages over other RSV-IV Barges with regards to charter rate and carrying capacity.
