In their own words
We are building a solar powered UAV. As you know, due to excess pollution levels and extreme garbage mismanagement, India is facing a crisis currently. We are focusing the application of our UAV to dealing with these issues by- A.) Detecting garbage using computer vision model integrated with our UAV and building an end to end solution to clear the detected garbage by giving the GPS coordinates with image of the location to the Municipality. B.) Monitor pollution levels with the help of AQI sensors integrated on UAV to get AQI mapping from meter to meter scale to have a better overview of the pollution variation and source of origin. We can effectively apply this method across highways, industries, cities, glaciers and then accordingly apply necessary restrictions to curb the levels down. Why Solar integration to our UAV- A battery powered UAV generally lasts upto 30 mins, but with the help of high efficiency solar cells(best power to weight ratio), we can significantly extend the flight time to atleast few hours. Such 20-30 mins flight time makes the application of drones very impractical, so in order to gather the data of a larger radius (3 kms atleast), we need to push the flight time further, in which solar can be of great help. In the past our team has worked at- Fraunhofer ISE - On high efficiency solar cells NTU Taiwan- Part of the team to built the world record for the longest flight time of a drone Electric Motorcycle- Built the first electric racing motorcycle from India and represented the nation at the Motostudent competition, Spain.
