Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and accompanied by ocular surface inflammation and damage. DES prevalence in India has been reported to be higher ranging from 18.4 to 54.3. During the COVID-19 quarantine, people began using more video display terminals (VDTs) & the prolonged use of VDTs predisposes them to DES. If DES remains untreated it may result in blurred vision and possible vision loss. Commercially available either single drug-loaded or drug-free lachrymal products include low-viscosity artificial tears (7 products), moderate-viscosity artificial tears (2 products), high-viscosity artificial tears (3 products), gel formulations (2 products) and lubricating ointments (4 products). The main disadvantage of these products is frequent administrations which leads to an interruption in the normal tear volume production which results in further worsening the DES conditions. The PolyEmul technology creates two compartmental structures onto the dispersed polymer-coated oil droplets of nanocapsules to accommodate two-different ocular active drugs. The two drug-loaded nanocapsule eyedrops are likely to produce a synergistic anti-inflammatory effect suitable for managing DES.
