Business Plan of SWAR developed by Themma Prakritik Ecosystems (OPC) Private Limited, Hyderabad Business Idea Groundwater is increasingly getting scarce and its demand is rising. Heat waves are prolonged and alarmingly rising. Groundwater is the key source to grow fruit and vegetable crops. Drip system is considered the state of art in irrigation efficiency but farmers get poor yield and face drying and dying of horticulture crops. The way forward is to shift from surface to subsurface moisture at the root zone irrigation and use measured moisture as key indicator to plan irrigation quantum and frequency and ensure healthy plant growth and high yield. Our innovation, System of Water for Agriculture Rejuvenation (SWAR) has scientifically demonstrated using 40-50% less water compared to drip and with better results for farmers in terms of yield, cost savings and manage with available water. Feasibility and why SWAR will succeed Horticulture growers using drip systems find groundwater scarce and buy tanker water at high costs. SWAR addresses this problem and is affordable add-on to drip system infrastructure. In addition to needing less water and energy use, farmers save on costs of weeding, less and more efficient use of fertilizers and soil and plant nutrients, no scope of plant root and stem diseases caused by existing irrigation system, early flowering and higher yield, more biomass and high root to shoot ratio. Measured moisture is rich ecosystem of soil microbes to improve soils and plant resilience. Demand characteristics Declining groundwater drip system plants face high moisture stress leading to low yield/poor quality and rising mortality of full grown peak yield age fruit trees. Farmers buy expensive tanker water to irrigate horticulture crops, especially in summer months. Over half of India faces recurring drought, falling groundwater table and drying up of wells. High evaporation loss in surface irrigation drip systems with rising and prolonged heat waves. Desperate farmers remove drippers to flood irrigate plants leading to 65% excess water application. SWAR measured moisture at plant root zone works efficient in water scarce horticulture farms and increases yield. It is affordable add-on to drip systems and works with low intensity gravity flow. It saves on weeding cost, reduced application of plant and soil nutrients, eliminates excess water based plant and root diseases and fosters a rich ecosystem to foster soil microbes to enrich soils. A portable moisture probe helps farmer measures moisture intensity to schedule irrigation and water quantum confident of root zone moisture level. Implementation Model: How the business idea will be developed and implemented? 60000 SWAR units are working in water scarce drought prone areas of Peninsular India. They serve as demonstration farms to build confidence of using transformative measured moisture at plant root zone system unlike water on the surface. We engage local entrepreneurs (preferable Farmer Producer Organizations and Women Self Help Groups with demonstrated “skin in the game” and marketing expertise to invest and are trained to assemble and install SWAR at plant root zone based on the species and provide service on measured moisture. Each services thousand acres per annum to sell four hundred thousand units and employs tem people. Market potential and revenue is built in the business model ensures good ROI. They bring own investment and tap govt. subsidy and bank loans to run the business. In Peninsular India we will have one hundred such enterprises over the next two years and five hundred enterprises over four years. Our business is high technology value proposition driven by local entrepreneurs with applications in farms, institutions, highways, parks, etc.
