Thira Rehab is an initiative to make advancements in rehabilitation technology accessible and affordable. Most of us can self-relate or know someone who had a fracture, stroke, or even traumatic injuries that made simple tasks like eating, walking, bathing, etc., difficult. While the cast can be removed or improved within a few weeks, complete recovery from the impairments following a stroke can take months, years, and in some unfortunate cases, never. Impairment is a complex, often chronic, problem that affects people with orthopedic, rheumatological, and/or neurological conditions. The long winding road to recovery is met with high costs for rehabilitation, underdosing in therapy, a dearth of trained therapists, and limited access to good quality rehabilitation services. Improving the overall rehabilitation infrastructure is a resource-intensive and time-consuming process. Meanwhile, semi-automating therapy sessions in large centres, at-home rehabilitation via remote supervision and assessment, and improving quality by translating the advancements in clinical research can make rehabilitation accessible and affordable. Technological solutions with intermittent supervision from a trained human therapist is a potential solution. We – Thira rehab identified this scope and started developing the technological solutions for rehabilitation. At present, we have developed - PLUTO - PLUg and Train robOt for hand rehabilitation to deliver intense, assisted movement training in an enriched environment. The minimalistic design and modular nature of the device make PLUTO compact, portable and affordable. We are also identifying other technological solutions which can pipeline following PLUTO. Thira rehab with PLUTO and other pipeline products will aid the patients in achieving the highest quality rehabilitation.
