Plastics have become an indispensable ingredient to modern life and it products have become an integral part of our daily life. It is produced on a massive scale worldwide and its production crosses the 150 million ton per year globally. In India approximately 8 Million ton plastic products are consumed every year (2008). The packaging and PVC pipe industry are growing at 16-18% per year. The demand of plastics goods is increasing from house hold use to industrial applications. It is growing at an annual rate of 22% annually. The polymers production has reached to 8.5 million ton in 2007. Adding to this, • Million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an environmental crisis. • As per Guardian, more than half a trillion plastic bottles of which will be sold annually by the end of the decade. • More than 480bn plastic drinking bottles were sold in 2016 across the world. If placed end to end, they would extend more than halfway to the sun. • By 2021 this will increase to 583.3bn, according to the most up-to-date estimates from Euromonitor International’s global packaging trends report. • Fewer than half of the bottles bought in 2016 were collected for recycling and just 7% of those collected were turned into new bottles. • Plastic items can take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills. But plastic bags we use in our everyday life take 10-1000 years to decompose, while plastic bottles can take 450 years or more. Thus, segregation of plastics at source is more important because plastic waste is non-biodegradable and remains in the environment for many years. Clogging of drains by plastic waste is a common problem. Though, there is a formal system of waste collection in urban areas, however, informal sectors i.e. rag pickers, collect only value based plastics waste. Pet bottles, plastic carry bags, metalized plastics and low quality plastic less than 20 micron do not figure in their priorities for the following reasons: • Collection is not profitable. • Rewards are not much as compared to the efforts required • Transportation of PET bottles and plastic wastes is problem. During ours research and survey, it has come out blatantly that segregation at source of plastic waste is the key. Vision: Develop a platform to create wealth from recyclable wastes and preserving ecology for the gen. next. Mission: To protect the mother nature and its beauty of the environment through efficient, fiscal and responsible practices Aim: At W2W, our aim is convert waste into wealth through Reduce, Re-use and Recycle (3Rs) concept. Objectives: • To design and manufacture a machine for collecting the plastic waste to secure ecological • To increase reuse and recycling rates of plastic waste products • To reduce the percentage of recyclable material to landfill • To establish the Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) through installation of waste collecting machines • To encourage waste to energy options • To promote SMEs in waste sector and through to increase number of jobs within waste services, recycling and recovery sectors The Team, W2W, developed a machine for collecting PET bottle wastes with the idea of forward and backward integration. It made look like an ATM and it shreds the plastic wastes and collected in the bin. There is a two reason for establishing this machine in the high traffic and high footfalls area. • During the process of Waste Management, transportation of plastic wastes is problem. Because it occupies more space and thus transportation cost is high. Thus, the rag pickers are not collecting the plastic wastes like pet bottles, plastic bags, etc. • This is user friendly machine, aesthetically designed in such a way that people come forward to drop in plastic wastes voluntarily. It motivates people do not throw the plastic wastes in anywhere.
