In their own words
An open access institutional repository is a database of scientific/educational reading material created by an institute to provide reading material to its students and also public in general. In this new world of digitization, creating an institutional repository is still a technically complex activity. So traditionally, institutes hire agencies or developers to create a web based institutional repository & for this, they also need to maintain small scale servers. All this results in unreasonable expenditure of time, finances as well as man-power. There are various service providers (mostly non-Indian) for the same which are expensive as well as time consuming. Further, when 5 different institutes create there repositories, 5 new websites emerge, likewise, 1 new website for every new repository emerges. That's not the case with W-GRID. Almost all the currently available methods use either old or outdated techniques with very orthodox designs and user interfaces. W-GRID aims to help all institutes and R & D labs in creating their institutional repository in a modern way. W-GRID uses a 'social network' like environment to engage readers and repository makers. One website for all repositories owned by their respective institutes, where anyone can read anything for free with just a signup. Repository makers simply need to buy an annual subscription package from the website depending on their storage space requirement and start uploading within a couple of minutes. Nobody needs to worry about all the technical aspects as in the traditional methods. Further, most of the content types like article, theses, publication, etc are limited for use by repository makers, whereas, everyone including readers get a dedicated blog space to write their own voice. Alongwith modern technologies and mobile responsive designs, social behaviour has also been incorporated in the platform such as user messaging, comments, email notifications, blogs, 'Login through Google' etc. Repository makers can upload their files in PDF and image formats. The price tags for annual subscription packages are less than half of what they pay to the agencies and private third party service providers. Once numerous institutes get onboard W-GRID, this will become an interactive hot place for latest scientific knowledge resource. Also, near-future plans include the inclusion of pharma, biotech and related research organisations & companies on W-GRID to help them create exposure for their organisation in the scientific community. Thus, everybody gets the benefits (repository makers get exposure, popularity, good-will & common public get direct access to quality knowledge). W-GRID will also result in direct dissemination of research data to the public in the fastest possible way, due to the fact that the institutes & labs can directly share their knowledge material on the platform with the whole world. So with W-GRID, an expensive, complex activity becomes inexpensive and dead easy. Also, all of the repositories stay at one single place, on a single web platform. No need to remember/search/visit 10 different websites for 10 different repositories
