Problem statement: There are 22 states in India with wild Asian Elephants. Of these, 10 states face severe Human Elephant Conflict resulting in human deaths, loss of income through crop depredation. Further, frequent elephant deaths due to unnatural causes outside forest areas puts the conservation of endangered elephant population at risk. A key problem in resolution of human elephant conflict is effectively restraining elephants within forests to prevent them from accessing crop fields. Conventional solutions such as elephant proof trenches, solar fences scaring and warning mechanisms have failed as is evidenced by the ever-increasing conflict. Astro Fencing Solutions addresses this key problem of restraining elephants within forests. Solution and Innovation The Melagiri Elephant Fence developed by Astro Fencing Solutions has successfully addresses this problem by developing an efficient, effective and maintenance free physical barrier. The innovative the design which is capable of withstanding the full force of an elephant’s assault on the fence, and also conceptually versatile to be implemented across various topographies and soil conditions with minimal impact on the environment. The design can be further customized to address other problem species such as wild boar, Indian Gaur etc., which also cause enormous economic losses to rural populations living around forests. A key innovation is in the manufacturability modularity of the fence components which utilize standard and custom designed elements. Cutting edge precast steel reinforced concrete posts can be manufactured under industrial conditions to high quality standards. This helps not only in enormous savings of time and cost, but also uniformly high-quality execution. We estimate that it would take less than a month to install 10km of high quality elephant proof barrier, which is a fraction of the time taken for conventional measures which do not even perform as expected. Validation The Melagiri Elephant Fence has been installed for a length of 10 km and has been found to drastically reduce elephant crop damage and elephant caused human deaths by over 95%.
