One of the most important breakthroughs in the fight against cancer in 21st century has been the development of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells for the treatment of blood cancers, mainly B-cell malignancies such as relapsed/refractory (R/R) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and multiple myeloma (MM). Unfortunately, the access to these potentially curative therapies has been limited to very few patients worldwide. There are several roadblocks for this, among others, toxicities associated with the therapy, very high cost of CAR-T cell therapy, the challenges associated with centralized manufacturing approach i.e. logistics and scaling up the manufacturing thus limiting number of patients that can be treated in a centralized manufacturing model of currently approved cell therapies. These challenges also negatively impact incorporation of innovative, complex, and expensive next-generation treatments in India as experienced in many western health systems. To enhance accessibility of these lifesaving therapies and overcome limitations in scalable manufacturing, CARCELL THERAPEUTICS PRIVATE LIMITED is establishing Safer, Point of Care (PoC), faster and low-cost semi-automated manufacturing of autologous CAR-T cells at Centers of Excellence (CoE) located within hospitals. This will enable on-site CAR-T manufacturing and short vein to vein time of 10-days using semi-automated cell therapy manufacturing.
