So, protein should be normally in blood, but not in urine. The main role of kidney is to filter the blood. When kidneys are healthy, they absorb all the protein (essential nutrients) and excrete out waste products and extra water from the blood. When kidneys are damaged, the protein starts to leak out into the urine. Having protein in the urine is called albuminuria or proteinuria. It is an early sign of kidney disease.
