Drugs are being used as therapeutic agents for treating of different diseases that are synthesized chemically which are usually associated with many side effects. Therefore, research efforts in recent past has been directed to invent new, safer and efficient natural metabolites that possess low toxicity and are easily obtainable with negligible environmental impact. Also, the significance of natural products in the drug discovery and development processes has been reported extensively. Majority of the natural compounds have been isolated from plants that constitute a large fraction of the current pharmacopoeias. Besides medicinal plants, various microorganisms have also been identified as good source of bio-active metabolites. At no other time in history have microorganisms been so present in areas such as agriculture and medicine, except as recognized villains. Currently, however, beneficial microorganisms such as plant growth promoters and phyto pathogen controllers are required by various agricultural crops, and many species are being used as bio factories of important pharmacological molecules. Traditionally, the discoveries have come from microbial strains residing in soil but microorganisms from certain unusual ecological habitats or niches like plants, leaf litter, insects and dung can also be expected to yield novel molecules. Therefore, our group has focused to work on new microbial sources, especially from less explored regions and niches to maximize the isolation of novel bio-active metabolites.
