Incorporation and impact of genomic technologies in several branches of healthcare have proved to be a healthcare as well as an economic success. Whilst genomics and its associated technologies are estimated to be a game changer in the near future for Indian healthcare sector, it is however marred by two acute challenges- lack of indigenously developed target capture technologies and lack of data/ statistical analysis based custom packages. These two issues have left a gaping hole in the healthcare sector whereby expensive technologies which are unlikely to be suitable for low-middle income countries (LMICs) have taken a prime position. This has fueled an unbridled rise in cost to potential healthcare consumers which in the long term could be unsustainable. Decipher DNA’s solution is to develop a sustainable technology development pathway which would involve develop and deployment of technologies pertaining to diagnosis of common and rare diseases, cell line authentication, mid-throughput computational biology tools and engagement with healthcare stakeholders to explore cost-effectiveness of incorporating these technologies in contrast to the existing techniques. This systematic approach to development and deployment of indigenously designed technologies would lower the cost to the healthcare consumer, improve turnaround time in diagnosis, improve diagnostic yield tier 2 and 3 towns and villages and most importantly reduce burden of common and rare genetic disorders through active disease prevention. Decipher DNA’s founder- Dr. Harsh Sheth- has previously developed two such tools- ultra low cost and high throughput NGS based microsatellite instability assay and NGS based detection of germline variants in 23 lysosomal storage disorders. Both assays have bee validated in large cohorts, have received 1 international patent and 1 national patent pending.
