Bihar, a state often associated with its rich agricultural heritage, grapples with the persistent challenge of poverty among its farming communities. This is particularly true for cultivators of unique local produce, such as Makhana (Makhanas), a highly nutritious aquatic cash crop. Despite the growing demand for Makhana in both national and international markets, farmers in rural Bihar often fail to realize fair prices for their harvest. This significant gap in price discovery, exacerbated by a lack of market access, limited negotiation power, and the prevalence of middlemen, traps these already impoverished farmers in a cycle of low income and vulnerability. Recognizing this critical lacuna, we are proud to introduce Farmstead, a pioneering initiative dedicated to revolutionizing the Makhana value chain in rural Bihar. Our mission is to empower Makhana farmers by ensuring transparent and efficient price discovery, thereby enabling them to access national and international markets. By leveraging technology and fostering direct connections, Farmstead aims to eliminate exploitative practices, enhance farmers' bargaining power, and ultimately secure better revenues for their hard work. Our commitment extends beyond mere transactions; we envision a future where improved livelihoods, economic stability, and sustained growth become a tangible reality for every Makhana farmer in rural Bihar.
