In their own words
Traditional textile industry has direct linkages with rural socio-economic structure however; most of these are not organized or integrated. In non-farm sectors, opportunities of livelihoods are either sparse and do not have women-friendly work environment. In broader perspective of cottage industries; rural producers have inadequate linkages to raw materials, limited technological support and tough access to market due to information asymmetries. This leads to distressed migration and adversely affects the village economy. To address this problem, Bhartiya Harit Khadi Gramodaya Sansthan (BHKGS) brought forward Solar Charkhas (Compact Spinning Machine run on solar power) as a tool of economic empowerment of rural women through enabling them to earn while working from their households. The use of solar charkhas and solar looms will ensure the continuous work flow in the various steps that involve production of Khadi. BHKGS envisions 5 crore livelihoods of Rs. 8000/month by 2022 across country through Solar Charkha project. The pilot project of this initiative was started by BHKGS in June, 2016 from Khanwan village where Training cum Production Centre (TPC) was established. Khanwan village was adopted by Hon’ble Minister of MSME Shri Giriraj Singh under Sansad Adarsh Gram initiative led by Hon’ble Prime Minister. The TPC acts as a facilitator of training and producing textiles through spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing, stitching, embroidery and other value addition activities at one place running on solar power. Currently BHKGS has 21 Solar Charkha Training Centres (TC) running across country and created 3500 women entrepreneurs who are earning between 6000/- to 10,000/- monthly through spinning from their households. The rural supply chain of Harit Khadi is backed by a team of 181 professionals and associated with wings of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), National Skill Development Commission (NSDC), SIDBI and NABARD. Based on the success of this pilot project, Government of India has accorded approval to set up 50 such clusters with a budget of Rs. 550 crores. The scheme envisaged to generate direct employment nearly to one lakh persons is named as “Mission Solar Charkha” and was launched on 27 th June 2018 by hon’ble President Shri Ram Nath Kovind on the occasion of world MSME day. Recently, three non-textile activities have also been launched from this TPC – Amino Acid manufacturing from Cow-urine and Human-hair as its major raw-materials, Bio-compost manufacturing from cow-dung and Neera manufacturing by Palm trees. BHKGS procures cow- urine at Rs. 10/ltr, cow-dung at Rs. 5/kg, human hair at Rs. 15/kg and Neera at Rs. 25/ltr from villagers. These activities have opened up added opportunities of income generation for rural eco-system and have received tremendous response so far. Every product manufactured in this TPC has direct linkages with market which ensures sustainability of project. On 8 th March 2018, leading womenswear brand ‘W for Women’ launched its ‘Harit Khadi Collection’ dedicated and started a nationwide awareness campaign. An in-house brand ‘Greenwear’ was launched on 30 th January 2018 which is going to be a chain of physical stores across country and global platform for e-retailing of rural produce.
