For diagnosis of disease like bone cancer, bone marrow diseases including infection, blood cancers (leukaemia), leukopenia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, pancytopenia and polycythaemia bone biopsy is required. The expert also suggests bone marrow examination for cases such as- fevers of unknown origin, Anaemia and Hemochromatosis. The histopathological diagnosis is required for proper treatment. Expert may suggest with chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatment based on the report The current biopsy technique is completely a manual process and requires insertion of the biopsy needle into the bone passing through the skin then to the bone by a screwing movement and a lot of force. The process is similar to the process of tubeless puncture repair. Therefore, this manual method for bone biopsy leads to higher pressure on the tumor affected bone leading to high risk of fracture causing increased morbidity. Furthermore, the biopsy technique is dependent on the experience of the doctor and undue force can lead needle penetration to the opposite side of bone (called cortex) and can damage important neurovascular tissue, leading to bleeding and tumor contamination in the surrounding area. There is increased pain and discomfort to the patient following bone biopsy due to multiple punctures into the bone with manual needle as it obtains limited tissue. One of the Co-Founder ( Dr. Abhijeet Salunke) is himself an orthopaedic onco surgeon and has carried out 1000’s of biopsies in last 10 years and realised the limitation of current biopsy procedure. The end product will be a device that can perform bone drilling and bone biopsy. It will have the capability to automatically sense the bone layers and stop when opposite cortex has reached. It will have functionality where the user can initially preset the distance to be penetrated and the needle will go as per the requirement.
