The Microfluidic paper device (MFP Device), developed under the BIG / DBT grant, utilizes the LAMP technology for the simultaneous and rapid detection of the five most common transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) i.e HBV, CMV, HIV & HCV and Malarial Parasite (Falciparum & Vivax). The reaction zones on this single use device are pre-coated with the reaction - mixes along with respective and specific primers designed for the detection of the nucleic acids of the TTIs mentioned. The device also has inbuilt Internal positive and negative controls for monitoring assay performances in each individual specimen. This novel molecular based microfluidic paper device would be an affordable alternative Point of Care Test (POCT) to the less sensitive immunoassays methods being used to screen donor blood. The MFP device is user-friendly and simple without the need for sophisticated equipment and trained technical expertise and hence would have a high acceptability. The MFP device would also find application to screen high risk populations including transplant services and dialysis services. The concept can be further extended to design and develop other infectious disease point of care panels, such as blood stream infections, encephalitis/ meningitis, gastrointestinal infections, respiratory infections, febrile illness of infective etiology.
