Oral mucositis (OM) is a painful inflammatory and frequently ulcerative disorder of the oral mucosa that severely reduces the patient’s quality of life. OM occurs in 20 to 40% of the patients submitted to conventional chemo therapy (CT), 80% of patients on high-dose CT, 75 to 100% of patients receiving hematopoietic cell transplants, and practically all patients with head and neck squamous carcinoma (HNSC) undergoing radio therapy (RT). Common symptoms of OM include pain, bleeding, ulcers, difficulty ingesting fluids or solids and speaking. As well as severe complications, such as secondary infections and loss of compliance, which may compromise the treatment of the primary disease and its outcome. In addition, OM may be progressive resulting in the need for systemic analgesics, risks of superinfections thus increasing hospitalizations and further loss of compliance for the treatment. Different strategies have been used to attempt the prevention or amelioration of this condition, and some clinical trials were effective. For example, cryotherapy and keratinocyte growth factor demonstrated some benefits in preventing mucositis. Zinc and vitamin E were effective in reducing the severity of OM, whereas Aloe vera, honey, photo biomodulation (PBM) therapy, and antibiotics demonstrated lower evidence. Company come up with the formulation of oral gel spray which is enriched with lyophilised induced mesenchymal stem cell secretome (iMSCs-CM) for preventing, treating, ameliorating and reducing the severity of oral mucositis.
