The term "Nidhi" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Nidhi", which means “place for deposits or storing up, a receptacle”, "treasure" or "wealth". A Nidhi company is a type of NBFC that is specifically designed to promote savings and lending amongst its members. Nidhi companies are not allowed to accept deposits from the general public, and they can only lend money to their members. Its a company which has been incorporated with the object of developing the habit of thrift and reserve funds amongst its members and also receiving deposits and lending to its members only for their mutual benefit.
