In the business of supply chain and logistics automation, the Automated Truck Loading System(ATLS) is the final frontier. It is estimated that while a majority of production processes and even warehouses are automated, only 2 percent of the global truck loading has actually been automated. Many reasons contribute to this lack of automation in this highly labour and time-intensive job. Some of these challenges can only be overcome by a change in attitude and methodology, including standardization of cargo space and unitization of goods. However, even where it is favourable to automate truck-loading, many customers still shy away from its implementation. Initial investment, a resistance to change, required modification in brown-field warehouses are some such deterrents.
