Zengrub is a student run digital ecosystem for home chefs to explore their passion. We are one of the very first ventures to be incubated by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of Madras Christian College. We started this as a small experiment during the lockdown as we saw a rise in individuals making use of their home kitchens to start their baking/cooking ventures. We noticed home chefs were lacking the basic knowledge and skill about operations, logistics and marketing. This inspired us to start a campaign on Instagram, called 'SPOTLIGHT', where we featured 1 home chef everyday - featuring their signature dish. We handled the marketing, sales and delivery for them on that particular day. We were also able to facilitate bulk orders through our network of home chefs. Some of our notable clients are Madras Christian College, Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Puthran and Associates. Through SPOTLIGHT, we were able to develop a working relationship with over 30 chefs, amassed a customer base of over 200, and generated a revenue of over 2 Lakhs. As a means of giving back to the society, we started the KARMA PROJECT, an initiative that aims to provide home made food to the underprivileged. The unique aspect of this initiative is that we were able to provide an opportunity for homemakers and mothers who love cooking. Problems Identified: Due to high startup cost, operational complexity and dependence on 3rd party marketplaces, starting a F&B business is impossible with mere culinary talent. The Implication: No incentive to innovate, and talented home chefs would lose an opportunity to start their ventures Our goal moving forward: We are looking to build an eco system of tools and opportunities for home chefs, to fuel their passion and also enable them to independently monetize their food ventures.
