Cricket products from India are still only given an afterthought, if at all, despite being the largest producer of cricket equipment globally. Consumers globally, when looking to buy top-end quality cricketing goods end up either importing from the United Kingdom or Australia or prefer foreign brands available in India. Ironically, most of the equipment for these foreign brands is manufactured in India. Only the absolute best quality equipment in this sector is actually manufactured by the foreign brands in their bespoke workshops in the UK or Australia. There are over 3,500 bat manufacturing companies in India but only a handful of brands. Among them very few are recognized on a global scale or bring an international level of standard - with both production and brand value, to the table. Additionally, the products available in the local markets in India are overpopulated with low-quality goods with lacklustre finishes and marginal lifespans. The top quality products by these manufacturers are mostly being exported to foreign brands, to be labelled, marketed and sold in their countries.The outcome of these practises is that the generic consumer ends up using a very sub-par product. Only international, or national level players in India have the access to directly purchase their custom made equipment from existing brands, in their desired specifications. Secondly, as major Indian brands only rely on bulk productions, little or no effort is put into providing women and junior cricketers with high quality products. Women’s cricket is growing rapidly but due to lack of commercialization, still lacks attention from all major brands. Similarly, junior cricketers who are aspiring professionals have little or no access to performance enhancing, high quality products, as it’s a low revenue generation segment, and mostly basic equipment is made available to them. While it is safe to say that cricket goods, as a whole, is one of India’s largest exports yet when it comes to tangibility and our cricket products, our Indian brands are not recognized for their quality. The biggest cricket brands in India, have captured a major chunk in the market by signing sponsorship deals with international players at exorbitant prices; only to be recovered by churning out bulk numbers and cost cutting on their products. The result is an average product being circulated, and below-par working conditions and poor minimum wages for the craftsmen working in such factories. Apart from the shoddy working conditions of the workers, extensive adulteration of raw materials is also widespread. There is a need for an Indian brand, which works in the highest ethics of craftsmanship and transparency. A brand that represents India for its quality, design and innovation in the cricketing market. And that’s what A2 stands for.
