In their own words

In today’s time, water is fast becoming a valuable commodity, and it is a necessity of time to recycle water used for commercial as well as domestic use. Most of the industries today are trying to achieve zero liquid discharge as it helps reduce the environmental impact as well as reduce the operational cost of the company by reducing the requirement of fresh water. Main challenge in recycling the water is reduction of the microbial content in the water and removing the dissolved chemical pollutants. Chemical treatments involving use of coagulants and oxidizing agents add to the cost of treatment and may also produce solid waste. Biological digesters are the traditional method of treating the waste water; however these cannot handle bio-refractory wastes. The time required for treatment is also very long, and needs large holding tanks for the same. In recent years cavitation is proving to be an emerging technology that can achieve the water disinfection with high efficiency. There are two ways to generate cavitation in water, using ultrasound and using the pressure energy of the water i.e. hydrodynamic cavitation. We intend to develop a sustainable solution for water treatment needs of domestic as well as industrial water by designing devices that utilize the hydrodynamic cavitation technology. Our project utilizes the hydrodynamic cavitation technology to achieve microbial disinfection of water as well as reduce the COD of the water. Hydrodynamic cavitation is produced when water flows through a constriction in the flow. We have designed cavitating devices that can produce cavitation at desired intensity, while requiring less energy input. These devices can easily be fitted in line and do not require lot of modification to the existing setups. The device itself does not consume any electricity to operate. The only energy needed is supplied by the pump which pumps the water. These devices are also expected to last for a long time without any maintenance. Depending on level of disinfection required, multiple devices can be added in series and hence scale up also becomes easier. The initial field trials conducted on our devices have resulted in upto 95% microbial disinfection. The same device can also be used in the electric pumps to generate the same phenomenon of water disinfection. If this technology is used for water disinfection at a commercial level, then we can significantly reduce the cost of water treatment as well as reduce the requirement of fresh water.
