THE KATHAL POINT Our country is in transition mode, a lot of changes are occurring and they are occurring at a pretty fast pace. One of the major changes that we see today is a quest towards a healthy lifestyle, which includes physical exercise and eating what is just right. But are we eating all the right stuff?? An inclining trend towards turning into a vegetarian is pretty much evident these days for obvious reasons, but what all are the alternatives in vegetarian food which could provide more or less the same taste, texture along with essential nutrients?? The Answer is “JACKFRUIT” The Jackfruit widely known as Kathal in north india and fanas/chatta in south, has been common food and fruit for the households in the previous times, given its nutritional constituents making it a whole food. Several researches on Jackfruit have been carried out worldwide and it has been found that it has good amount of nutrients including, but not limited to carbohydrates, proteins, potassium, calcium, iron, and vitamin A, B, and C, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine and folate. Apart from the vitamin content, the fruit is also rich in essential minerals. The simple sugars present in jackfruit can improve your overall health. A cup of jackfruit contains 11% of the daily recommended allowance of fibre which will improve your digestive system. Where in today’s time the non-veg food is prone to the bad bacteria accumulation, and the chicken/mutton/fish farming has ensured the availability of meat with artificially injected proteins, the Jackfruit is a natural and effective replacement.
