Research conducted at the Regional Centre of Biotechnology has illuminated several facets of VIRULINA's functionality. It is purported to hinder the replication of viral RNA in COVID-19 viral cells by targeting RNA polymerase, a crucial enzyme in the virus's life cycle. Moreover, VIRULINA has displayed intriguing immunomodulatory effects in preclinical studies. These studies suggest that VIRULINA has the capacity to augment both early and delayed hypersensitivity reactions to immunogenic stimuli. This immunomodulatory potential further extends to the stimulation of chemotaxis-dependent leukocyte migration and the proliferation of lymphocytes. Additionally, VIRULINA exhibits the capacity to enhance the phagocytic efficacy of polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells against invading microbial agents, thus stimulating a non-specific immune response. In the context of inflammation, VIRULINA is reported to mitigate inflammation induced by poly(I:C) through the reduction of inflammatory mediators, such as Nitric Oxide, cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors. Such actions position VIRULINA as a potential candidate for modulating virus-induced hyperinflammation, including the cytokine storm observed in severe COVID-19 cases. Furthermore, VIRULINA has demonstrated significant mucolytic and fibrinolytic activities, which could be valuable in addressing respiratory complications. Shifting the focus to the polyherbal formulation Hypercum, its specific mechanism of action centers on addressing issues related to the release of Nitric Oxide (NO) from the endothelial cell lining within veins and arteries. The process can be delineated into several discrete steps: Step 1: Hypercum exerts a stimulatory effect on endothelial cells, prompting the release of Nitric Oxide (NO) gas. Step 2: The NO gas, once liberated from endothelial cells, diffuses into the smooth muscle cells that form the lining of small blood vessels. Step 3: Inside the smooth muscle cell, NO binds to an enzyme known as guanylate cyclase, thereby activating guanylate cyclase. Step 4: Activated guanylate cyclase catalyzes the cleavage of two phosphate groups from guanosine triphosphate, resulting in the formation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Step 5: cGMP takes on the role of phosphorylating proteins, including the smooth muscle contractile protein myosin. Step 6: Phosphorylation of myosin induces its relaxation, ultimately leading to the vasodilation of the blood vessel.
