Y Nextec Lifesciences Pvt Ltd (NLPL) (www.nexteclifesciences.in), a biotech startup was founded in 2012 by Dr Ranjana Srivastava and Dr Brahm S. Srivastava, former scientists at CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow. The company mandate is development of simple diagnostic assays for infectious diseases, biomarkers and diagnostic/ sreening assays for lifestyle related and life threatening diseases, Biosensors , newer screening system solutions for novel antimicrobials, anticancer and against other diseases. The company has been recognized as Start Up (Certificate No.:DIPP2474) byDepartment of Industrial Policy and Promotion. The company started with a lab located in Biotech Park, Lucknow. NLPL received financial support of Rs 37.10 lakh in 2015-2017 as Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) from BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council), Department of Biotechnology (DBT, Govt of India) on “Introduction and development of a new DNA based kit for Early and accurate diagnosis of Tuberculosis”to demonstrate Proof of Concept and a prototype of diagnostic kit for early and rapid diagnosis of TB. New TB Test developed by Nextec Lifesciences TB is curable if timely diagnosed and timely treated. Conventional diagnosis of TB is dne by microscopy which lacks accuracy and misses 50% of TB cases. Culture is 100% accurate but has a large turn around time (6-8 weeks), dependence on which results in delay of initiation of treatment causing transmission of disease and new incidence of TB. TB continues its war with 10 million new incidence and 1.6 million deaths each year having not only societal impact but also a great economic loss. The new, Point-of- care TB test, developed by Nextec is based on amplification of M. tb (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) specific DNA sequence if present in clinical samples and its detection by fluorescence measurement. The test detects DNA equivalent to less than 10 TB bacilli and delivers results within 10 minute (short turn around time) with 100 % accuracy. It requires minimal infrastructure and reaction and detection can be staged in a battery operated device.
