In the fast fashion era, traditional Mughal hand embroidery declined, replaced by machine embroidery due to lower costs. The situation worsened during and after the COVID pandemic, forcing many artisans to seek alternative livelihoods due to economic hardships. However, under the Shwet banner, artisans rediscovered confidence in their craft. When the initiative began in 2020-2021, only 69 women were motivated to learn Chikankari. This sparked a growing trend, with over 700 artisans now part of Shwet. The program not only provides skill training but also helps artisans secure fair employment and access government entitlements through the Convergence Initiative. Nearly 99% of artisans have received their Artisan Cards, and 95% have opened bank accounts. By organizing artisans into clusters, Shwet has empowered them to negotiate fair wages and positively impact Chikankari production in Lucknow. Shwet’s continuous support ensures socio-economic sustainability for women artisans, addressing poverty, empowering women, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering community stability.
