Innovation and improvement Head and neck cancer cases in India face a large problem of untreated cancer tumours due to late detection of cancer. We are designing an electroporation device for treating such tumours with electrochemotherapy. It uses a proven technology of reversible cell electroporation using short high voltage electric impulses. We have introduced some new features to the device with a view to make it more useful to Indian and developing world scenario as well as improve functioning and scope. These are: 1. Our applicators will be customized to access head and neck cancer tumours. 2. Simultaneous plugging of two applicators which can be toggled to enable variation in electrode configuration during treatment. 3. Rechargeable battery. Provision for solar charging. 4. Integrated web camera for visual documentation for future reference. 5. Internet connectivity for online reporting/logging of patient sessions. Scalability Presently, there is a need for 1000 electroporation devices for head and neck tumour treatment in India alone. Globally, the developing and underdeveloped countries have largely similar needs. Even Europe and US have requirement for this device. The device currently addresses only superficial (cutaneous and subcutaneous) tumours. We are researching for addressing the treatment of deep seated tumours. This will widen the scope of use by including other types of cancer tumours.
